Day # 1 in Brown County Indiana

The Hikes in Brown County State Park:

Two self-directed park hikes are planned.

Scenic Southern Loop Hike - This 3.5-mile scenic, moderate hike begins at the Brown County State Park Nature Center (where you register for this hike), then winds through the woods, along Strahl Creek and past Strahl Lake. Midway through the hike, local Boy Scout Troop 190 will host a campfire and refreshments at the Strahl Lake Shelter. This hike includes mostly paved roadway, some woodlands and several steep steps at the end of the hike leading back to the Nature Center.

Rugged Woodland Hike - This 2.75-mile hike provides more challenge. It begins at the Recreation Building adjacent to the Rally Campgrounds (where you register for this hike), then winds through the woods and around Ogle Lake and returns. Midway through the hike, local boy Scout Troop 190 will host a campfire and refreshments at the Ogle Lake Shelter. This hike includes sets of steep wooden stairs, hills, and paths that lead back to the starting point.

Fees:
There is a fee to enter the State Park
$4 for in-state vehicles and
$5 for out-of-state vehicles
plus $1 per person for the hike
children 5 and under are free

Groups traveling via motorcoach are charged $1 per person entry fee, and each hiker will be charged an additional $1 hike fee. For groups of 25 hikers or more, one will be admitted to the hike free of charge.
Motorcoaches and RVs should enter the park via the West Gate.

Arrival:
We suggest arriving at Brown County State Park and your chosen trail location between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to register and begin the Winter Hike. Naturalists will be located at various points on the trails until noon.

Parking is available along the park roads, in designated lots and in Rally Campground.

Before the Hike:
Enjoy Breakfast with the Naturalists at the Abe Martin Lodge from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Other Hiking Trails:
Brown County State Park boasts nine other trails for hikers who like to follow their own course and set their own pace. These range from easy to rugged. An easy-access "Friends Trail" is located adjacent to the State Park office.

After the Hike:
A special Hiker's Buffet Luncheon - featuring hot, hearty, home-cooked food - will be available at the Abe Martin Lodge.

Local craftsman will be displaying & selling wares in the Abe Martin Lodge lobby.
